Conasupo (Compañía Nacional de Subsistencias Populares) was a Mexican government agency responsible for ensuring food security and stabilizing prices of basic consumer goods. It was established in 1971 and operated until it was abolished in 1999 due to economic restructuring policies. Conasupo was responsible for importing and distributing basic food items such as beans, sugar, and milk to low-income families at subsidized prices. The agency also established retail stores where consumers could buy these items directly. However, Conasupo came under criticism for corruption and inefficiency, as well as for the negative impact on domestic agriculture caused by the importation of subsidized goods. The abolition of Conasupo was part of a broader market liberalization process aimed at reducing government intervention in the economy.
